Recently I found a nice plugin called Delink Comment Author. As per information from Alex King

This plugin gives you the ability to remove the link a commenter left as their URL without removing the entire comment. A link to do this is added to your new comment e-mail notifications and to the comments list in your admin area.

Great! Isn`t it? I tested Delink Comment Author but received no e-mails like that. Perhaps Spam Karma replaces those mails so that this function does not work for me. Now it works. And the admin features are working pretty good, too!

So I rebuild the plugin to make it work for Nofollow Case by Case and NFCBC SEO Light, too.

To make it work like mentioned above you need one of my NFCBC plugins, Delink Comment Author (alexking.org) and the NFCBC Plugin Add-on itself.

Installing:

- Download your favorite Nofollow Plugin and comment administration tools.
- Upload uncompressed files to your server
- Activate the plugins in WordPress.

FOR A SIMPLER WAY OF MANAGING COMMENTS AS WELL AS COMMENT SPAM WE DO NOT NEED THOUSANDS OF FEATURES. WE SIMPLY HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THE RULES BEHIND IT!

- Spam comments passing our spam filters are normally very short. They seldom have a value and shouldn`t get a link at all. Do we really have to honor every comment with a link? Why should we pay for it?

- Some comments are a little bit longer. They might have some kind of value but not enough value to pay for it. Nofollow should be enough for these.

- Great comments normally explain something. They definitely might have a value proposition and normally should be honored with a good link.

- Pings and trackbacks do not have to be discussed. In most cases they are extremely relevant and often have high value. If they are not worth a link they should be deleted in most cases.

There might be some exceptions. Let`s keep them in sight.

If you are operating a private blog you might have no problem with follow links for all. If you`re responsible for a business blog this could become very expensive these days! So – how can wie handle comments fair for all but without additional work? Actually we shouldn`t waste too much time with comment moderation. Neither with black and white lists nor with manual corrections. May be NFCBC SEO light could do the job for you:

It helps you managing comment spam in your WordPress Blog.

How does it work?

You can decide if the author of a comment should get a link, get no link or nofollow links only.

What`s the difference between Nofollow Case by Case and NFCBC SEO light?

NFCBC SEO light does not replace the standard link management system of WordPress. It just hooks into the get_comment_author_link function in order to check what to do with the link. It doesn`t replace nofollow links in comments, just for the author of the comment. You can even delink an author without deleting his link from the database completely.

No more functions? What`s new?

Standard WordPress systems do not give any value to comment links. You might want to change that in case of very good comments or perhaps for your friends, to help them increase their Google Rankings a little bit. Replacing nofollow links with good links does not automatically mean that you want to honor every single comment in your blog. What about spam, very short comments (without any value), shop links, payed links and so on…

For you it officially doesn`t matter if you link with nofollow or not. You`re loosing Google PageRank with nofollow as well as with normal links. In case of nofollow you just kill a little bit of Google PageRank on your website, without nofollow you might give the lost piece to somebody else. But if you place good links to spammers you might loose trust additionally. So be a little bit careful what you`re voting for!

NFCBC SEO light may do the job for you a little bit easier:

• Spam comments are typically very short. This type of comment has no value. So it doesn`t get any link from you (automatically).
• What about normal comments? Would you like to use nofollow for them? With NFCBC you can!
• What about pingbacks and trackbacks from other blogs? Thanks? Welcome? Get a backlink?
• What about specials? Yes, you can change the game for every single comment author link…

How do the given rules look like?

To make comment management easier I put these rules in place:

• No link for comments smaller than 50 characters.
• Nofollow link for comments smaller than 170 characters.
• Good links for larger comments, trackbacks and pingbacks.

You can change the rules within the plugin code or make exceptions like this:

• Add /dontfollow at the end of a comment author link to get a nofollow link where needed.
• Add /nolink at the end of a link to remove the link.
• Add /thisfollow at the end of a link to make an exception and trust this link.

I think you will not have to play with links too much.

Ich habe die SEO Pagebar heute im Zuge meines eigenen WordPress 2.6.2-Updates installiert, wobei mir ein kleiner Bug auffiel (fehlende Weiterblätternfunktion im Mittelteil der SEO Pagebar) und die fehlenden Funktionen oben.

Da ich gerade nicht weiß, wie ich den Datumswechsel zwischen deutscher und amerikanischer Schreibweise einbauen soll – vielleicht weiß das jemand hier (?) – gebe ich erst einmal die deutsche Version heraus:

How to install SEO Pagebar 2.1:

• Download SEO Pagebar 2.1
• Unzip SEO Pagebar 2.1
• Upload the folder “seopagebar” into your WordPress Plugin Directory
• Go to Admin -> Plugins and activate the plugin SEO Pagebar 2 (2.1)
• Go to the options page if you like to change the default settings.
• Modify your template like described below to see the output.

What is SEO Pagebar 2 good for?

Oh well. You might have a WordPress Blog in use that does not really perform. May be other people have done a lot already to strengthen their WordPress System? People like me never use a standard motor. SEO Tuning is a lot of fun and helps you to be more successful. Some things should be shared, I guess. If you like, you can make use of a funky tool we now call SEO Pagebar:

Uhhh… has been a long night, yesterday. Sebastian wanted to start his Webcoding Blog and me to introduce him into the World of WordPress. “How did you do this? What about a plugin for that? How do you manage the WordPress CMS thing? What about the Pagebar?” Hmmm… lot`s of questions… Shit.

I said something like: “Hey guy, you will not be able to learn everything within a day! And to be fair, I`m not god. I don`t know everything about WordPress but I can tell you how the things work, how to start. I can also give you some plugin support. Finally you can get a few templates to start with… But listen. I have a little problem with a Pagebar Plugin that might become a problem for you, too. So I suggest that we will not close our nightly skype developer session until this problem is fixed as well as yours. As you are a coder I`m sure we`ll find a solution for my SEO Pagebar Plugin tonight. Do we have a deal?”

Sebastian aggreed and after a lot of trial and error we finally made the SEO Pagebar Plugin work in our WordPress CMS. It was about 2 o`clock in the morning when we finished. YEAH! DONE!

We already have some new ideas for SEO Pagebar 1.2 or later. But let`s see what the current SEO Pagebar could do for us right now:

Currently SEO Pagebar 1.1. can do the following:

• Since SEO Pagebar 1.0 we already get more link juice for our articles. I rebuild the Pagebar Plugin from Elektroelch to get more spread out of it. Old features are supported but SEO Pagebar works a little bit different to share more PageRank with older articles we have and to enlarge our page navigation a bit.
• With SEO Pagebar 1.1 we now can make use of the SEO Pagebar Plugin not only in standard WordPress Blogs but also if we make use of a WordPress Page. This is important if we want to use the CMS functions of WordPress in order to have a self designed homepage.

CMS Example:

This is my homepage – This is my Blog Page – This is a category page, my ‘Internet Category’

If you tell WordPress to make use of a special Homepage Template the Blog Page normally does not exist anymore. With a little trick you can get your Blog Page back. But if you do so the Blog Page really is a WordPress Page, even if you include your index.php. And that`s why it had been so difficult to include a Pagebar in it which normally works only on index.php or archive.php. The database requests are very different.

The Results:

SEO Pagebar 1.1 works perfectly with every WordPress Standard Blog. (No exceptions known yet.)

If you like to make use of SEO Pagebar 1.1. within a CMS configuration
you should be aware of the following:

Within Pages and Archives WordPress internally works very different. We have not been able to sort out all problems we saw. Normal inclusion should work fine for everyone as long as you let your Blog show 10 articles per page (CMS solution problem only). Otherwise the system internally wouldn`t count correct so that the SEO Pagebar Plugin would have to be modified manually.

To do`s:

• Coming soon: Solution to show more or less than 10 articles per page without having to modify the plugin. The plugin should accept admin values than. (CMS solution problem only.)
• Perhaps a CSS Solution for the SEO Pagebar Plugin.

Just deactivate your old plugin, upload SEO Pagebar 1.1 and activate it.

Beim SEO-Umbau kam unter anderem die Frage auf, wie eigentlich eine für Google optimale Seitennavigation aussieht. Eine Google optimale Pagebar (Seitennavigation) sollte Robotter führen und PageRank umverteilen können. Die optimale Lösung stellte ich mir deshalb so vor:

Wie man sieht, wächst die optimale Seitennavigation mit Ihren Aufgaben – sowohl wenn der Bot von hinten einsteigt, als auch dann, wenn er die Seiten von vorne crawlt. Wichtig war mir vor allem, dass alte und neue Artikel gleichermaßen “Saft” bekommen, damit sie nicht verloren gehen und möglichst früh gespidert werden. Ein schöner Nebeneffekt: Für Besucher empfinde ich die neue Navigation als “ruhiger und übersichtlicher” als zuvor.

Heute kam ich nun in die Verlegenheit, einem Kunden seinen Blog umbauen zu dürfen. Weil ich grundsätzlich nicht an semi-optimalen Lösungen interessiert bin und mir nun gerade erst Gedanken über die optimale Pagebar-Navigation gemacht habe, war ich mehr oder weniger gezwungen, erst einmal eine solche als WordPress-Plugin zu programmieren. Hier im Blog ist sie bereits eingebaut, in sämtlichen Kategorien. Falls sie jemandem gefällt, kann er sie gerne haben. Als Inspirationsquelle diente mir die Pagebar-Navigation von “Elektroelch”, welche ihrerseits bereits auf auf einem Script von Lester Chan aufsetzt.

Es wurde ein Bug beseitigt, der sich bei Links in Kommentartexten von WordPress 2.2 bemerkbar machte. Der Bug trat auf, weil WordPress offenbar von rel=”external nofollow” auf rel=”nofollow” umgestiegen ist, so dass die Ersetzung ins Leere griff und wundersame Folgen hatte.

Bei der Gelegenheit wurde dem Wunsch einiger Leute entsprochen, Kommentarlinks in einem neuen Fenster zu öffnen. Letzteres kann jetzt optional eingestellt werden.

Hier geht`s nun also zu “Nofollow Case by Case 1.2“…

Wer Nofollow Case by Case bereits verwendet, braucht eigentlich kein Update durchzuführen. Auch die letzte Version lieferte bereits validen Code.

Beim heutigen Plugin-Update auf Version 1.1 wurden folgende Kleinigkeiten geändert:

1. Vereinfachte Update-Kontrolle:

a) Der “Nofollow-Case-by-Case-Link” auf der Plugin-Seite (im WordPress-Admin) führt nun direkt zur Plugin-Seite und nicht mehr auf die Startseite von fob marketing.

b) Für die Versionskontrolle des WordPress-Installer-Plugins wurden entsprechend der Entwicklerangaben notwendige Erweiterungen in das Plugin eingefügt. (Das Installer-Plugin selbst wurde übrigens nicht getestet. Feedback wäre schön. )

2. Dezente Code-Optimierung:

Mir ist aufgefallen, dass einige Links (ohne Nofollow-Tag) ein Leerzeichen zu viel im Link-Code aufwiesen. Ist eigentlich völlig egal, sieht aber ein bisschen doof aus. Aus <a href=”http://www.fob-marketing.de/” >… habe ich deshalb – nur für`s Auge – <a href=”http://www.fob-marketing.de/”>… gemacht, die kleine Lücke also entfernt.

An der eigentlichen Funktionalität des Nofollow-Plugins hat sich nichts geändert:

• Der automatisch von WordPress vergebene Nofollow-Tag wird standardmäßig entfernt.
• Einzelne Links in Spammer-Kommentaren können mit rel=”nofollow” ausgestattet werden.
• Einzelne Autoren-Links in Spammer-Kommentaren können ebenfalls mit rel=”nofollow” versehen werden.
